Description
Reports to: Building Principal and Supervisor of Special Education

General Summary: Special education paraprofessionals/Personal Care Aids (PCA) assist students with special needs under the direction of a certified teacher. The special education paraprofessional/PCA assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities, help special needs students, and cares for their physical, emotional health and safety, affirming their abilities, and striving to promote dignity in all relationships.

Duties and Responsibilities:
● Provide instructional support under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher
● Assist in implementing behavioral support plans with students who may be aggressive or disruptive in class
● Assist students in the use of personal safety techniques and behavior support which may include physical
management (training provided upon hire)
● Assist with social integration of students in general education setting.
● Consultation and collaboration with Special Education and General Education Teachers as well as related service
staff
● Assist the Special Education teacher with progress monitoring activities
● Assist the Special Education teacher with implementing specially designed instruction for students as per their
IEP
● Provide assistance with ambulation (walker, support to the special needs student while included in the general
education setting crutches, and wheelchair).
● Assist students with toileting and grooming activities
● Monitoring the incidence and prevalence of selected academic, behavioral and/or health problems and report to
the special education teacher.
● Assisting the teacher or student to arrange the room’s environment
● Complete all required documentation for Medical ACCESS billing
● Any and all other duties as may be assigned per the Supervisor of Special Education

Requirements
Qualifications: Special education paraprofessionals must meet Pennsylvania's regulatory requirements contained in 22 Pa. Code §14.105, which include the following:
1. Have completed at least two years of postsecondary studies.
2. Possess an associate degree or higher; and
3. Meet a rigorous standard of quality as demonstrated through a state or local assessment.
4. Each school year, Instructional paraprofessionals shall provide evidence of 20 hours of staff development activities related to their assignment.
